Description

Experience the adventure firsthand in China Safari as one of the first Americans traveling in China in modern times, Robert M. Lee explored the fabled Pamir Mountains, and proved (in October 1980) that Ovis poli – the famed Marco Polo sheep – exists in China. China Safari is the story of that adventure, and lays the groundwork for the forthcoming autobiography of adventurer, explorer, entrepreneur, collector, and the founder of Hunting World, Inc., Bob Lee.

China Safari, An American Explorer in the Forbidden Pamirs

In 1980 Bob Lee achieved what no other American – or Westerner – had done in the previous fifty years at least, and maybe longer. He not only explored the Chinese People’s Republic, but obtained permission to hunt their sensitive border areas in the West with a minimum of accompanying escort. Most importantly, Bob Lee not only proved that the Ovis poli exists in China, but he took representative mature male specimens.

China Safari instantly brought the Western world up to date and catapulted its knowledge of that obscure hunting area, more than fifty years forward into the new millennium.

This is one safari you will never forget![/mpc_quote]

China Safari covers the period from July 1980, Lee’s first exploratory expedition to Western China, through October and December expeditions in the same year, plus return trips in May 1981 and June 1985.

There are few sights more exhilarating – and humbling – than that first view of a fully mature Marco Polo ram on the top of a windswept mountain in Central Asia. Lee’s perseverance and ability to endure both hardship and bureaucratic entanglement, plus, lastly, his dedication and skill in putting it all down in prose and picture combine to stir the reader to stretch out for bigger and better things – just beyond our grasp.

China Safari measures 9- x 7 1/2-inches, totals 290 pages, includes both color photographs and black & white illustrations by the author and is bound in gold embossed hard cover with a full color slip cover.
